QR Trading Cards For Windows Phone Apps
A new approach towards promoting Windows Phone and its marketplace apps has been set in place from the Nokia Hong Kong who has managed to put together a couple of app trading cards with the most downloaded and useful apps currently in the marketplace.
The purpose of these QR trading cards is to help salesmen pitch Windows Phone handsets along with the wide range of popular apps that are currently available in the Microsoft Windows Phone marketplace so that users won’t be reluctant in choosing the OS because of the misconception that it doesn’t pack enough quality apps.
These cards can easily be scanned by with Bing vision and in a matter of seconds you’ll have it installed on your handset and bragging about it to your friends.
This is definitely an interesting approach to promote Windows Phone and its handsets, especially since the trading cards have also been divided into categories such as social, games, music and video etc., enabling a more accurate localization of the required apps.
Although these cards cannon be sold, we’re sure that if you’re interested in starting your own collection the guys behind the counter might be persuaded in “borrowing” you a few.
This is an interesting way of kick starting Windows Phone collectibles especially since Windows Phone enthusiasts in China appreciate these rare and somewhat unique items.

Nokia Camera Extension App Demoed
Yesterday we talked about the possibility of Nokia releasing a new camera app that will bring forth a bunch of new features that we have yet to see on Windows Phone handsets.
The Camera Extension app for Nokia’s Lumia series appears to have been demoed in a small video and we have to say that it looks pretty promising.
With smart group shot, rapid multi-shot, panoramic and timer-shot, the Camera Extension app promises an entirely new experience with the Lumia camera.
A quickburst features enables you to take up to 8 photos in a short burst, while the panorama mode stitches together 5 photos.
Nokia is definitely investing a lot in exclusive apps for their Lumia series so that the Windows Phone experience can be as unique as possible and we’re probably going to see even more apps showing up soon.
Although the availability of the app has not yet been revealed, we assume that it’s not going to be a Chinese specific app (as demoed in the video) and that it will be pushed to Lumia Windows Phone handsets around the world.
No launch date has been mentioned until now, but we’re assuming that within the next couple of months we’ll be seeing it live on most Lumia devices.
Would you love having this app? Let us know below!

Nokia Reading Available, But Not in the US
Nokia promised a while back that they’ll be releasing a new app to their Lumia line, which will fill in the gap left by apps like Amazon Kindle that are not available on Windows Phone.
The Nokia Reading app enables Nokia Lumia users to access a large collection of e-books and purchase best sellers in a digital format right on their handset.
While the service has not yet been released globally, some countries have already been given access to the app, except for the U.S.
It could be only a matter of time until Nokia grants access to Nokia Reading to U.S. users as well, but until then you’re more than welcomed to check out the download link below and see if your country made the list.
This territorial division of Nokia Lumia exclusive apps may pass as soon as licensing applications are granted by various countries; otherwise it would really suck to have a Lumia Windows Phone and not be able to use all of its many useful apps.
The app can be downloaded free, but if you’re interested in reading a book you should be ready to pay for it, as only a handful are free of charge and the rest need to be purchased.
Let us know below if the Nokia Reading app is available in your country and if not, would you like it to be?

Toronto Hosts #SmokedbyWindowsPhone Challenges
The #SmokedbyWindowsPhone Microsoft campaign seems to be expanding outward to Toronto so that the brand awareness can reach Canadian users as well.
With an audience mostly comprised of Blackphone, iPhone and Android users, the #SmokedbyWindowsPhone challenge seems to have attracted people mostly because of the $100 prize which most of them though will easily win.
The guys from MobileSyrup also decided to challenge the Windows Phone device and ended up losing badly in front of everyone.
They managed to shoot a small video on how the competition is taking place in Canada, and from what we can tell, the devices are now placed on a table in a dueling-like position.
It’s great that the Windows Phone challenge is finally reaching Canada and that it’s still being used to promote Redmond’s mobile OS in a head-on competition with other mobile operating systems.
As you can see from the video above, most of the challenges remain the same, meaning that checking the weather and posting photos on your Facebook account are still the preferred challenges that Microsoft uses.
Have any of you managed to defeat a Windows Phone in a #SmokedbyWindowsPhone competition?

Nokia Prepping Camera Extension App for Lumia Series
The Creative Studio app that Nokia launched a couple of weeks back might not be the only thing that Nokia is cooking in regards to making full use of your handset’s shooter.
During a Nokia “experience day” in Hong Kong, it looks like a Nokia rep revealed that a new Camera Extension app for Lumia devices might be making its way pretty soon.
With features that include panorama shots, smart group capture, burst mode, and self-timer, the soon-to-be-released Lumia exclusive app looks pretty impressive.
Nokia did claim a while back that they’re planning on porting some of the neat features that Symbian handsets had onto Windows Phone devices, and this might be the first step towards achieving that.
It’s common knowledge that Nokia has been making a name for itself by means of neat camera features and the fact that Windows Phone devices have been left out of this development loop only comes to strengthen the idea that this new all might indeed be real.
With the Camera Extension app for Lumia handsets we bet that Nokia will be gaining a lot of love from the community, especially since the previously mentioned features have always been demanded.
We don’t know if the app will be launched globally or if it will simply be a perk in Chinese devices, but we really do home that everyone will be able to make use of it at some point.
We’ll keep a close eye on this interesting rumor and we’ll get back to you with more details as soon as we know more. Excited?

Hammering Nails With Nokia Lumia 900
While we know that the Nokia Lumia 900 has been advertised as having the toughest display yet, we were not about to put that to the test with our own handset.
However, it does look like somebody put the Gorilla Glass to the test by hammering a nail and by actually using a hammer and a nail on the display surface.
Luckily, no Lumia 900 handsets were injured during the making of this video and we strongly encourage you not to do this at home if you really care about your device.
While it may look safe of video, your AT&T carrier might not appreciate the fact that you decided to do a little carpenting with your brand new Windows Phone device.
If anything, you might end up buying a new phone altogether and would have proven that the Nokia Lumia 900 can’t really take too much pounding unless it’s in a safe environment.
Anyway, check out the video above because it beautifully demos the fact that Nokia can still make polycarbonate casings and Gorilla Glass smartphones that can keep it together even in case of a zombie apocalypse.
If you haven’t purchase one already, you might want to thing again!

Windows Phone People Hub Now Integrates Twitter Profile
Microsoft has managed to pull another rabbit out of their hat following the silent update featuring off-line Facebook message support, and they’ve now made some modifications to the People Hub.
Now featuring Twitter profile info right into the People Hub Notes section, you’ll now be able to read the Twitter bio of a selected contact.
While this is no way some major update, it does go to prove that Microsoft can still make on-the-fly adjustments to Windows Phone in the cloud, and provide additional features along the way.
The newly added feature is something that most of you might have missed as we were not aware of it in the first place nor did we notice when the update occurred.
It might have something do to with your device automatically syncing with Microsoft’s servers and pulling contact details from Twitter and other social networks, and at the same time adding the new adjustment.
Anyway, it’s definitely a new piece of useful information to have in the People Hub and we’re definitely keeping a eye on other features that might have been added without our knowledge.
If you stumble across something that wasn’t there to begin with, don’t hesitate to leave us a comment below so that we can double check your results.
Are you happy with the Twitter profile in your People Hub or is it unnecessary? Let us know!

Lumia 900 Landing in China in June
The Chinese FCC-like authority (State Radio Regulation Committee, also known as SRRC) has recently approved the Nokia Lumia 900 for Chinese distribution.
The fact that it’s neither a CDMA nor TD-SCDMA handset makes it difficult to predict which carrier will be shelving it, because both China Telecom and China Mobile seem to be out of the picture at this point.
Nokia has really pulled a number on iPhone sales in China because they’ve managed to overthrow iOS sales with the newly launched fleet of Lumia Windows Phone devices.
Considering that they’re also throwing it the Lumia 900 to the already existing Lumia 610, Lumia 710, and Lumia 800, we’re expecting to see some really interesting quarterly figures coming from the Finnish OEM manufacturer.
We don’t know with what price tag will the handset be arriving in China, but we’re assuming that it’s going to be consistent with the pricing in U.S. or Australia.
Of course, some carrier deals will be there to sweeten the deal for those not willing to get the device carrier-free, and we bet that massive sales will be directed towards that particular end.
Having the Nokia Lumia 900 shipped in China, the world’s largest market for smartphones is definitely no small fee from Nokia, especially if they manage to psyche their local community one again.
If you’re from China and you’re reading this, rest assured that the Nokia Lumia 900 will be coming your way sooner that you might think.

HTC Titan II Announced on Telstra – Europe Not on the Waiting List
Everyone in Europe that was hoping to get their hands on the HTC Titan II might have to hold off on that thought because the HTC Titan II will not be available, at least not soon.
Australian carrier Telstra has already announced that they’ll be launching the handset on May 29th at $20/month on the $49 plan, $10/month on the $59 plan & $0 on the $79, $99 & $129 plans.
No pricing for the off-contract version has been revealed yet, but we’re estimating that it should be around $750-$850.
May 29th is just ten days away (from the time of writing) and those of you in Australia can start saving up some money starting now if you want to get your hands on the 16 megapixel Windows Phone handset.
While we’re pretty bummed out that Europe won’t be getting the HTC Titan II now, all that might change as time passes and HTC might think twice about not sharing it with Europeans.
Anyway, we’ll be keeping a close eye on news and rumors involving the HTC Titan II and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out more.

The Wrap: The Focus 2 arrives, “Dear Windows Phone,” new 99 cent Xbox games
Here are my favorite Windows Phone highlights of the week. What about you?
The Samsung Focus 2 arrives on Sunday
Heads up that the Samsung Focus 2 makes its AT&T debut this weekend. With a $50 price tag, solid spec sheet, and 4G LTE network support—not to mention classy looks—I’m betting Samsung has another Windows Phone winner on its hands. The critics agree. CNET’s Jessica Dolcourt reviewed the phone this week and liked what she saw. “I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Focus 2,” she concludes. Ben “Smoked by Windows Phone” Rudolph also put this white beauty through its paces and walked away impressed. “If you’re looking for a value-priced phone that gets you top-level features, the Samsung Focus 2 is a great choice,” he wrote. See AT&T’s entire Windows Phone line up
Tip: Rocking the lock screen
Once you do pick up that new Focus 2, check out Laura Foy’s latest tip for new Windows Phone owners. This week she delves into the secrets of the lock screen. (Looking for more great tips? We’ve got ‘em—here and here.)
“Dear Windows Phone”
We get lots of emails from people who decide to give Windows Phone a try and are so wowed by the experience they feel compelled to share. (Keep ‘em coming!) As Business Insider and a few other outlets noticed, we recently published one from a longtime Apple fan that landed in Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s inbox (funny how he ignores all my mails). Read it on our website. Speaking of converts, Sydney Myers over at PhoneDog has an interesting and thoughtful post this week on what soured her love affair with Android and why she now pockets a Nokia Lumia 900 instead. “I need a tool, not a toy, “ she writes. “I need a phone I can pick up and use. Windows Phone is exactly that and it manages to be seductively attractive in the process.”
List of 99 cent Xbox LIVE bestsellers grows
Last month I wrote about price cuts for seven popular Xbox LIVE titles in the Windows Phone Marketplace, including Angry Birds and Burn the Rope. Well, since then the list of bargain titles has quietly been growing, and I wanted to makes sure you knew about all the great games you can now get on the cheap. Here they are. What are you waiting for?
And finally…It’s Metro: the musical!
Windows Phone owner and UK-based musician Matt Oglesby had this thought the other day: What could I do with my Lumia 800 and some free music apps from Marketplace?
A lot, it turns out. His composition “Metro” was made from five apps—BitSynth, Piano 7, Level 6 Guitar Chords, SoundFlake Synth, Tones—mixed together using Cubase. The only thing he added extra was some drums. (Here are the full production notes.) As a hack guitarist myself, I thought this was especially cool. Even cooler: One of the apps he used, BitSynth, was coded by Windows Phone blog contributor Andy Myers, whose office is right next to mine. (Look for Andy’s chronicle of how he made BitSynth on the blog soon.)
Windows Phone 8 Native Code Support Hinted in Microsoft Job Post
An automated testing environment seems to be on Microsoft’s mind when they’ve recently made public a new job post, and the fact that this implies native code ability for Windows Phone 8 is definitely appealing to us.
While most of you have desperately craved the need for native code support in Windows Phone 7, it looks like Windows Phone 8 will definitely support it and developers will even have a testing environment to fiddle around with.
Porting apps from one platform to the other will probably run smoother than before, as developers won’t have to rely on the sandboxed limitations that Silverlight and XNA currently provide.
However, Microsoft might be opening up to a world of trouble as their mobile OS could be exposed to some security issues that Windows Phone didn’t have until now.
How will they tackle the new challenge remains to be seen, but the fact that developers will have free access to the intricacies of Windows Phone 8 software and hardware is definitely good news.
The job post is scouting a “Software Engineering: Test”, which means that if you’ve got the right skills for the job, you might be it.
Read through the full job post below:

Lumia 610 Commercial By Kris Aquino
Kris Aquino is the Philippines’s president sister and apparently, she has been coerced by Nokia to start promoting the Nokia Lumia 610.
What seems to be a pretty good “Amazing Everyday” ad, although Kris Aquino isn’t promoting all the amazing features that come with the Tango handset, she could singlehandedly boost Lumia 610 sales in the Philippines.
The ad is surprisingly good and having it aired featuring the president’s sister is definitely a win in Nokia’s book when it comes to promoting their low-end Windows Phone handsets.
We don’t know if President Benigno S. Aquino III will be showing up in a future Lumia video, but if the guys from Nokia manage to pull it off, it’s hats down from us.
So far, Nokia is the only OEM manufacturer that has been going “all in” with Windows Phone while manufacturers like HTC or Samsung are still falling behind and sticking to the more safe Android OS.
This 2012 is going to be an interesting one in terms of Windows Phone awareness and market share and if the Nokia-Microsoft partnership survives all the way to 2013 with Windows Phone 8, then we can look back to this moment as a turning point in Nokia’s history.
As usual, if we come across other commercials or ads with Nokia Lumia Windows Phone devices, we’ll keep you guys posted.

Professor Green Using the ZTE Tania
Professor Green has been spotted recently using the ZTE Tania Windows Phone as his handset, while doing a small video with his daily activities.
After clearly showing off some of the features that Windows Phone is endowed with, such as the ability to track down a decent coffee shop around you, Professor Green seemed to have been extremely pleased with the experience.
If you check out the video below (careful, it contains strong language), you’ll also notice that DJ IQ is also pretty impressed with the overall look and feel.
If anything, we can assume that a Nokia rep will be contacting him for a device pitch at sometime soon so that he can start showing it off at concerts.
While we’re definitely huge Windows Phone fans, it’s great to see that celebrities are finding it not only fashionable, but also extremely useful in their daily activities.
We’ll keep an eye out on other VIPs that are handed Windows Phone devices (particularly Nokia Lumia handsets) just so that we can get an estimate on how many smartphones has Nokia been giving away.
Who know, if you’re famous enough, you might even get one too!

Ralph de le Vega Still Confident in Windows Phone – Expects Bigger Boost With Windows Phone 8
At the JP Morgan technology conference, AT&T’s CEO Ralph de le Vega expressed his confidence in Windows Phone once again and at the same showed a lot of enthusiasm for what the future has in stored for Microsoft’s OS.
Clearly impressed by Lumia sales, he also stated that he’s looking forward to Windows Phone 8 because it will significantly boost sales.
While we definitely agree, we’ll still have to wait some quarterly figures before actually popping the champagne and celebrating Microsoft’s success.
“I am really pleased with what I am seeing out of Microsoft and Nokia coming out with their first product. The operating system works really well. It is simple, it is easy to use, it is intuitive.
The reception to the Lumia launch has actually exceeded our expectations. So we think there is a very good chance that Microsoft will have a very good OS that will be right in there with iOS and Android.
When they come out with Windows 8 in the fourth quarter, I think it will actually add to the value that that OS brings to the marketplace, in that that will be the first time that you can truly have a similar experience on your PC, on your tablet, and on your smartphone from soft Microsoft. From what I have seen and the previews that I have been given, I think it is going to be exceptionally good. I am very upbeat in what they are bringing to the market.”
AT&T’s CEO definitely knows something if he’s making such claims and it seems that the partnership with Nokia has definitely paid off.

Have you updated to Windows Phone 7.5?
For the past few weeks I’ve been mentioning that you’ll soon need Windows Phone 7.5 installed on your phone to buy, download, or update apps from Marketplace. (This applies to both the phone and web storefronts, by the way.)
We’re now doing the final work needed to turn on this new requirement, so I thought it would be a good time for another friendly reminder. If you’re just tuning in, my earlier post has all the details on why we’re doing this. (In short, the new requirement is tied to a larger Marketplace improvement effort.) But the key takeaway is that if you like apps and games, you’ll soon need Windows Phone 7.5 installed to continue using Marketplace. Most of you already do.
If not, you’ll find a checklist and step-by-step instructions for installing Windows Phone 7.5 on Update Central. I’ll also be back with another reminder on the day the requirement actually kicks in.
Microsoft security updates and the Common Vulnerability Reporting Framework
As a part of the Industry Consortium for Advancement of Security on the Internet (ICASI), Microsoft is pleased to present an initial set of monthly security updates – originally released on May 8 – in the consortium’s newly established Common Vulnerability Reporting Framework (CVRF) format, for your examination and feedback. Today, ICASI released version 1.1 of its CVRF – a markup system designed to make security bulletins and advisories machine readable in an industry-standard fashion.
Even though many vendors have followed Microsoft’s lead in providing comprehensive security updates to customers, the formats vendors use vary. CVRF provides the entire industry with a way to share and present data in a coordinated and structured manner.
CVRF is free for anyone to examine and use. The goal is to build a data-markup framework that can be used by anyone publishing or examining security update information on the Internet.
CVRF is a work in process. For many customers, a machine-readable markup framework for security releases might not be a pressing need. For instance, home-computer users or small businesses may choose to install security updates automatically. However, many business customers spend time “copying and pasting” our security bulletin content into their risk management systems, spreadsheets and corporate notification emails manually as part of their IT security compliance and remediation task list.
For these customers, this machine-readable format may enable more efficiency and automation. Faster and more efficient guidance for these customers means they can more quickly ensure protection, which is always our goal. For those that do not require automation, we will continue to offer our bulletins in the current format. For those customers looking to automate and streamline their security-management process, or for those who are simply curious to see what happens when vendors from around the industry roll up their sleeves and work to make the update process better, visit the Connect portal to read more about CVRF, and to examine CVRF-formatted bulletins. Visit https://connect.microsoft.com/ and click SIGN IN in the upper right-hand corner to sign in with your Windows Live ID. Once you are signed in and are looking at the home page, use the invitation code “cvrf-9BK8-6W2T” (without quotes) to join the program, or visit https://connect.microsoft.com/site1098/InvitationUse.aspx?ProgramID=7665&InvitationID=cvrf-9BK8-6W2T directly.
Your feedback will be relayed to the ICASI working group of which Microsoft is a member. Together we’ll continue to make CVRF a truly robust, collaborative standard throughout the Internet ecosystem.

Nokia TV Launched – Available Only in Finnish
Finnish Nokia Lumia owners will be glad to find out that Nokia has added yet another app to their collection and Nokia TV is it.
Only available in Finnish so far, those of you that scan the QR code below can actually download and install it, regardless of their location.
Although we don’t know why someone who’s not from Finland would want to use it, it’s still nice to see that Nokia has imposed no country limitations, meaning that if you’re on vacation you can still check out your favorite videos.
At the same time, it could also mean that the service might become available worldwide at some point and that Nokia is simply testing it out on Finnish users.
We’re definitely finding the second idea more appealing since we’d love to have Nokia TV installed available worldwide, but ultimately it’s Nokia’s call.
Anyway, it seems that some guys have already videoed the app in action and have posted a video on YouTube demoing it.
You can check out the video if you’re interested in a runaround of its features and you might want to drop Nokia an email if you want it available to your location as well.
